Please remind students that they are only guaranteed on-campus accommodation if they are admitted to UVic, pay their $200 acceptance deposit and apply for on-campus housing by June 30, 2012.

7. New Biomedical Engineering Degree Program
The University of Victoria is excited to announce that its new Biomedical Engineering Degree Program was approved by the University Board of Governors on January 31, 2012. Please note that approval from the Ministry of Advanced Education is still required before the program can be offered.  If approved,
the Faculty of Engineering will begin offering this program to both first- and second-year engineering students in September 2012. More information about biomedical engineering at UVic can be found at

Post Secondary Institution Sign Up!

Do you plan to attend a university, college or trade school next year? If you do, you'll want to complete the PSI Selection form.

The Post Secondary Institution (PSI) Selections form is now available online for students graduating in June, 2012. This electronic PSI Selections form should only be submitted by students who expect to graduate this year and are applying to a PSI (e.g universities, colleges and trade schools).

An instructional document has been posted for schools at the TRAX Information Updates web page:  http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/trx_updates/ .  This document includes snap shots of all the screens students will use to select PSIs.

Students access this online form by logging into the Student Secure Web (SSW) site:  https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/tsw/tsw/student/ and click the “Post Secondary Institutions Selections” menu option.  Note that students who do not yet have a SSW account will need to create one prior to gaining access option.  Note that students who do not yet have a SSW account will need to create one prior to gaining access to the PSI Selections form.

Students’ PSI selections must be submitted by April 30 for interim transcript information to be forwarded to BC and Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) institutions in May for early admission.  For final transcript information to be sent to PSIs by July 31, 2009, students must submit their PSI selections by June 30.  In addition to the BC Electronic PSIs option and the OUAC Electronic PSIs option in Section 1 of the form, students may submit a maximum of six selections.  Requests to send transcripts to additional PSIs can be made for a fee by completing a “Transcript Request Form” available at:  http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/transcript/transcripts_ordering.htm

Accessing the Electronic PSI Selections form
Students access the electronic Selections form from the Student Secure Web.  Schools do not have access to this site. This is a personal document which requires students to provide authorization for the ministry to release their information to outside institutions.

Step 1:  Students log into their account through the Student Secure Web and select the link “Post Secondary Institution Selections”

Step 2:  Students should carefully read through the “Important Notes” before selecting the “Select PSIs” link.

Step 3:  Section 1 allows students to select all of the BC Electronic PSIs and/or the Ontario University Application Centre.  In addition, they may make a total of six more selections from Sections 2 and 3.

If a desired PSI is not listed, the PSI Additions form must be completed and submitted electronically to the ministry.

Once all choices have been selected students hit the “Next” button to proceed to the authorization page.

Step 4:  Students must confirm and authorize the ministry to forward their information as requested.

Step 5:  Students should print off this page as a confirmation of their selections.  Alternatively this page can also be viewed again at a later date by viewing the “View PSI Selections” link on the introduction page (Step 2).

Canucks's Kevin Bieksa Says Check Out Mind Check!

Mindcheck.ca (http://mindcheck.ca/) is the culmination of a three-tiered project to recognize symptoms and better understand the challenges of mental illness. Kevin Bieksa is hopeful it will have one positive result to remember fallen teammate Rick Rypien in the most positive light (http://mindcheck.ca/quiet-hero).

Mindcheck was created in order to assist young people to identify and understand mental distress they may be experiencing and to link them to sources of help that will enable them to learn skills and strategies to manage these problems. Being able to recognize early signs and finding ways to deal with them increases the chances of better long-term outcomes and positive mental health across the lifespan.

The Canucks for Kids Foundation, Fraser Health and Provincial Health Services Authority and BC Children’s Hospital worked in conjunction to re-launch the expanded website on January 21st and Bieksa’s participation is the blueliner’s best means to remember his close friend. Rypien, who had long battled depression, was found dead Aug. 15 in his Alberta home.

“I obviously have a personal interest invested in this and it’s near and dear to my heart to carry on his legacy,” said Bieksa. “I went through it with him the last few years and understand the struggles and mental health challenges and how underestimated it can be and how overlooked, too. There’s still not a lot of conversation out there and we’re trying to raise awareness and erase the stigma associated with it. Hopefully, we don’t have to see anybody else go through something like that.”
